At a few moments he is broken, for example, when he starts drinking to forget the horrors committed in the POW camp.

The book starts of with Louie Zamperini and his family. Throughout his childhood, Louie was a ways a troublemaker, he beat up neighborhood kids, stole, smoked, and drank. At one point in his life he ran away from home. But that all changed when his brother, Pete convinced him to start running. Louie found that he was really good at running and in no time, he was trying to enter the olympics. He destroyed highschool and college runners, everybody was interested. He finally was able to enter the Olympics with other famous runners from America. The Olympics were held in Berlin that year, and Louie met Hitler. Louie ran the fastest mile ever recorded, and he was personally called by Hitler to be congratulated. A couple years later, Louie entered WW2, he was to fight on the pacific coast against the Japanese. He and his crew had a large clunky ship that people called the flying death trap. Eventually Louie and his crew became attached to the ship and called it, "Super Man." After a few bombing missions, Louie's island was bombed by the Japanese and Super Man was destroyed. His crew was transferred to a different island. There they met a B-29 called the Green Hornet, it was not in shape to be flown, it was falling apart. On one of the patrols, the planes engines failed and Louie with us crew, plunged into the ocean. Only three men made it out including Louie. They floated for over 40 days, surviving on birds, fish, and rain. They tried to catch sharks that drifted around their ship, but it was no use, they were to fast and strong. One of the survivors, Mac had died and they dumped his body in the ocean. The Japanese found Louie and Phil were taken by the Japanese. The first camp they went to was nice, they were given medical treatment, fed, and were treated nicely. Then they went to 2 more camps, they they were split apart. The worst was Louie's last camp, Naoetsu.eventually Louie was released but he was haunted by the Bird, a ruthless prison guard who tormented him and beat him. The other prisoners planned to kill him but he fled before they could. Afterward the bird killed himself to avoid war crimes. Louie went insane after marrying his wife. The bird was in his dreams and he wanted to go to Japan so he could hunt him down and kill him. He did not know that the bird was dead. He became an alcoholic so he could forge the war and the camps. That's all I have read for now.

I think the theme is similar to the title, like food and water, your will is needed to survive. ...more "
