As Hazel Grace Lancaster would say, this is not a book about cancer. Written about two cancer patients, The Fault in our Stars is a heartfelt love story that will pull you in.
Hazel Grace Lancaster is a 16 year old girl who has terminal cancer in her lungs, which means her lungs will fill up with unhealthy amounts of liquid from time to time. She was diagnosed at the young age of 13 years old. Soon after she was diagnosed, the cancer started to escalate at an alarming rate. It continued to escalate to the point where the doctors had tried almost everything, and nothing worked. When things started looking down for Hazel the doctors tried one last thing, and it worked! Hazel and her family called this “The Miracle”. The miracle did not cure Hazel’s cancer, although it helped to drain her lungs.
Post miracle, Hazel started to become very depressed. Soon enough, she became so depressed that her mother unwillingly forced her attend a support group. Hazel detested support group, and did whatever she could to get out of it. One day, after being forced to attend support group, Hazel met Augustus Waters, a charming teenage boy whose leg was amputated due to thyroid cancer. Hazel and Augustus bonded through their sickness, but tried their best not to let it drag them down. Hazel persuades Augustus to read her beloved book, An Imperial Affliction, by Peter Van Houten. A novel about a young girl who battles cancer. Hazel and Augustus enjoy this book a great deal because they feel they can easily relate to it. Throughout their journey, Augustus and Hazel share many ups and downs of their cancer experience(s).
I found this book enjoyable because as Hazel Grace says, “It is not a typical cancer book”. This book discusses much more. John Green uses many deep quotes that make you think, such as “Some infinities are bigger than other infinities”, and “You put the killing thing right in between your teeth, but you don’t give it the power to do it’s killing”. This book is written in a beautiful way that makes you want to cling on to every last word. ...more "
