I am not sure of any of those facts. So, trying to form an opinion as much in a vacuum as possible. The writing and characterization are stunning and seemingly, vintage Harper Lee. Through the first half of the book I was living and breathing through an adult Scout as she revisits her home-town and is working through separation of self from the Southern tomboy doted on by her father and community into a modern young New Yorker. And it was blissful. Unfortunately, there was a turn and for me and the plot-line became muddled and overwrought with political and sociological ideology. What began as a sumptuous banquet of our beloved characters, especially in the vividly reproduced memories of Scout, ended with something else, something less tasteful. Of course, in the long lasting carnage of sequels, literary and cinematic, my opinion is that To Kill a Mockingbird should have been left to stand alone. Really, what could follow that novel with anything but something akin to disappointment and a heavy sigh......more
