The only reason this book doesn't get a 5 star rating is because of the order that the chapters went in. After starting out with several of our founding fathers, I got the sense that this book was going to be very patriotic and relate to our country as a whole. However, his list gets much more personal once he gets a few chapters in. But, since this book is opinionated, I can't even really say that what he did was wrong. But, since there really is no plot of this book besides Nick Offerman talking about personal heroes he believes showed Gumption in their lives, I think he did a good job with dividing the chapters up into three sections: Freemasons, Idealists, and Makers. Something that surprised me about this book was Nick Offerman's writing style. With this being only his second book, I was surprised to be reading such big words, and words that I have never even heard of no less. I expected his writing style to be more comedic (which believe me, it definitely was), but he had a surprising amount of serious philosophy and writing style. Nick gave his readers a whole different side to people they most likely already thought they knew, through his own particular interpretations of their lives and the lessons he learned from them. And while very often throughout the book he would add in a comedic element, through a personal story or funny remark, he also has a great deal of philosophy. For example, he talks about the use of technology and how people cannot seem to enjoy their lives without their phones or computers or televisions, and I thought that was very interesting, especially after reading Feed. In one instance, he says "In this day and age, the reading of books has possibly a greater number of easy distractions than ever before, in the ever-present availability of the internet, not to mention our ability to actually watch films and television shows upon the small-screened devices we carry in our pockets."-pg 161. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of American history and important historical figures, fans of comedy, and true Parks and Rec/Ron Swanson fans. But even though I chose this book because of the funny, celebrity author, I still enjoyed this book and am glad that I read it. ...more "
