I've read this book countless times, far more times than I can remember. Harry Potter has been in my life ever since I was a child. I still have the french VHS of "Harry Potter a L'Ecole Des Sorciers" (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in french, which is weirdly a direct translation of Harry Potter at the School of Wizards) somewhere back home. Having suddenly an ache for this story once again, I felt a bit sad realizing how hard it would be for me to indulge in Harry Potter once more. I'm at the tail end of a Wheel of Time read through, in the middle of the last novel, and I now work two jobs, with a home and two cats to take care of. Time for reading just simply isn't coming back as frequently as it did before. My friend suggested, after I told her my woes, that I should listen to the audiobooks, a though I wouldn't even allow cross my mind. The last time I read all the Harry Potter books, nearly three years ago, I had bought all of the Canadian first-edition hard covers for the occassion. Those books are some of my most prized possession, and enjoying Harry Potter in any way BUT was a sin! She did have a point, however, and it was really looking like I would either have to push all my reading plans for the year to go through this series AGAIN for the umpteenth time, or I could listen to the audiobooks while I carry on work and chores.

I swear, once this whole virus thing is over I'm going to smooch her right on the forehead, because what a TREAT that was.

Not only was it a treat, but it was so fast and easy! I finished the first book within two days, all the while carrying on my chores and work as I would've done in any other normal settings. Here in Canada, we only have access to the Jim Dale versions of the audiobooks (legally, that is), and I was a bit bummed out at first. I had heard nothing but stellar things about Stephen Fry's performance (and the hilarious story of how J.K. Rowling purposely slipped in the word 'pocketed' into the books far more times than she ought to because Fry had a hard time saying the word), and so I was a bit skeptical about Jim Dale's performance.

I was wholeheartedly wrong.

Jim Dale is a WONDERFUL narrator, really bringing life to all of the characters with various accents, influxes, tones, and voices. He manages to keep the book consistently interesting from start to finish, and never felt unnatural to me, despite hearing Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and cast as their respective characters whenever I think about any of the characters. He did a wonderful job absorbing you into the story, and I think that is naturally highlighted by his whimsical nature. I'm really curious how that'll be handled in the future books, when the series takes a deep dive into much more deep and dark themes.

As for the story, I'm surprised I haven't left a review of this book before. There isn't much to say at this point about Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone that hasn't already been said by every person who's ever read a book EVER. It's a flawed classic, one that introduced one of the most vivid worlds ever penned. Still, as an adult, I would kill to check the mail one day to find a letter for Hogwarts, and that will forever be the case all thanks to this world that Rowling built in Philosopher's Stone. Knowing the entire series, a lot of the characters, especially the adults, definitely don't align with their depictions in the final books, but that's to be expected with the first book of a series, especially when it was really made for kids. If you hand Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to a child, I would definitely have a few questions. This, however, is a children's tale through and through.

With recent events following the author J.K. Rowling, it's hard not to ignore ANY of it, despite this review not being about her, but about her work. I will refrain from talking about this any further not to skew the topic too far, but this is also far too important for me not to mention. Like mentioned before, Harry Potter was and still is one of the most inspiring things I've ever stumbled upon. It's where I go for comfort, for entertainment, for intrigue, and everything else. It is why I'm going to end this, and every, review with this:
