Although being complicated and dense, Dune remains a masterful story that has not dated at all.
The story predominantly is engulfed in a struggle of power between House Atreides, House Harkonnen, and the Imperial Empire. The novel follows a young heir Paul Atriedes coming of age looking to fulfill the prophecy that surrounds him. The Atreides are awarded with the power to harvest the desert covered planet of Arrakis for the spice melange. The inhospitable planet is inhabited with colonists and the desert people called the fremen. Arrakis is a harsh and unforgiving place where water is treasured above all other commodities. Paul must race to unite the fremen tribes to defeat their common enemy to improve the ecology of their planet.
Since its inception Dune has remained the well crafter masterpiece that it was meant to be. This book has stood the test of time, even giving other famed novels of the same genre a run for their money still today. Dune truly sparks your imagination from the mighty sand worms to its unmatchable political intrigue. The characters hold many traits that the people of earth hold like tribal honor codes, tribal responsibility, Catholicism, and Islam. Perhaps the best way to argue that Dune is truly amazing would be to quote Arthur C. Clarke and let you decide: “Dune is unique among sci-fi novels… I know nothing comparable to it except Lord of the Rings.”
In my own mind, Dune is a huge success that has captured me in unforgettable ways. I love how the book shows many attributes from our world and incorporates them into the diction while remaining its own story. The book can stand alone without the need to read the sequel novels to obtain full satisfaction. From start to end the reader will have an affinity for the main characters within the novel as the plot captivates you. With my total outlook on the book being positive, I can see the sometimes extremely complicated wording to be intimidating. However, Frank Herbert truly is delivering me the kind of science fiction that I love.
I love sci-fi but, I don’t read much of it because I prefer fantasy novels. But, Dune feels like the perfect blend of the two. After starting to read Dune, my whole outlook on other sci-fi works has completely changed. I cannot look at another novel or movie I’ve seen without seeing comparisons. Dune has truly sparked a natural feeling basis that many other works base their story off of. If you have ever wondered what all the fuss was about, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy and immerse yourself in the masterpiece that is Dune. ...more "
