"Finished Sense & Sensibility, and I’m afraid I would have to give it a solid 2 star rating. The characters seem silly from today’s perspective, overly emotional and virtuous (even given the historical context). The descriptions are tedious, the eternal comments on character explain too much." Jan 23, 2026 03:23AM

Miriam Toews
“It may have been the light at 5:36 on a June evening or it may have been the smell of dust combined with sprinkler water or the sound of the neighbour kid screaming I'll kill you but suddenly it was like I was dying, the way I missed her. Like I was swooning, like I was going to fall over and pass out. It was like being shot in the back. It was such a surprise, but not a very good one. And then it went away. The way it does. But it exhausted me, like a seizure.”
Miriam Toews, A Complicated Kindness

Warsan Shire
“My alone feels so good, I'll only have you if you're sweeter than my solitude.”

“She was becoming sad. There is no joy involved in following others' expectations of yourself.”

Philippa Gregory
“She is Melusina, the water goddess, and she is found in hidden springs and waterfalls in any forest in Christendom, even in those as far away as Greece. (...) A man may love her if he keeps her secret and lets her alone when she wants to bathe, and she may love him in return until he breaks his word, as men always do, and she sweeps him into the depths with her fishy tail, and turns his faithless blood to water. The tragedy of Melusina, whatever language tells it, whatever tune it sings, is that a man will always promise more than he can do to a woman he cannot understand.”
Philippa Gregory

“A few weeks ago my uncle came over to borrow my dad's socket set and when he asked my dad how he was my dad said oh unexceptional. Living quietly with my disappointments. And how are you”
