Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is a book that starts out pretty slow but gets more interesting and wanting you to read more as you go. I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 because, of the slow start at the beginning. The book had very good details about the characters. It had a good plot all throughout with a good climax to make it interesting. Scott Westerfeld also did a good job on having different personalities between the characters which set them apart all throughout the book. In the beginning Westerfeld wrote in the very beginning that Tally, the main character, was an “ugly.” This means that she hasn’t been though the “pretty” operation yet because she is not sixteen yet. Most of her friends are in New Town which is where all the pretties are. Tally has to wait to turn sixteen to go there and turn “pretty.” Her journey throughout the book really tells us her personality though how she looks and her “ugly” personality. The book had a good climate which was a unexpected turning point. This is where the book go interesting and wanted me to read more and more. There was a big difference between one of the other characters which depends on her choices later. You can tell about their differences when the book said, “Shay sometimes talked in a mysterious way, like she was quoting the lyrics of some band no one else listened to” (Westerfeld 60). This was very different from Tally because Tally wanted to turn “pretty” but, Shay did not. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone if they can be patient to a slow start to the book. This book was interesting and kept me thinking. The book had interesting characters, and had exiting main points in the book. Uglies made me think about how you can be comfortable with who you are and you don’t have to be like everyone else....more
