This book really is a treasure. Pulley sticks to her guns in terms of what this story is really about throughout. The story is driven by one constant idea (love...;_;) and every scene is there to express that and fuel the final scene, which is what the book is really all about. It never wavers and even though I wished it was longer, just because I didn't want it to end, every scene felt purposeful and important. I ADORED Kite, and I don't know how that is possible considering the (view spoiler) but it is, apparently. He was a brilliant character. The setting was also very rich and vivid. I kept dreaming about Kite standing on the deck, because it was so real to me as I was reading. There was a potent sense of ship life in a very short space of time as well as the total awe that is present in all Pulley books because of the genius way she implements and explores the fantastical.

There were problems, but I just can't help but give it five stars. Much like Pepperharrow, the ideas and the constant thread of LONGING and ROMANCE and the sheer imaginative force of the book is so unique. There's really nothing like this book on the shelves at the moment and I'm just sad I have to wait for another Pulley book now.

P.S THE ABSOLUTE RIP-ROARING STRESS OF THE LAST FEW PAGES......I probably lost a stone in sweat. There were tears, there were red fingernail lines in my palms. I am submergé d'émotion

reread: okay so i re-read this because clearly I forgot the agony the first read put me through, but anyway, I'm convinced right now in the early hours of the morn that this is the best love story ever written. screaming, crying, the pain, the pain. and the problems I thought I had in the first read, well i don't know what I was on about really. There are still times when I'm not sure what Natty P is getting at with certain lines/phrases, and I do wonder occasionally why Jem didn't do much to help the Englsih (though I think I have worked this out, sort of) but ah who cares. So much is left to the reader. Like, Natasha trusts you so much. No spoon-feeding to be found. I'm still in awe but also terrible amounts of Missouri Kite agony.
