I found it extremely interesting how people used to express their love for each other, or perhaps how they show their affection. With so many ladies and gentlemen in the same room, the affection is represented through how many dances one would dance with the same person and how much they have engaged themselves in conversations. Sometimes I even felt that they must all be experts in expression reading in order to read so much information for so little hint. This must also show how Mr Darcy was overpowered by his own feelings when he pronounced himself to be ardently in love with Elizabeth. I do love the subtleness in their language.
Austen's lively language makes the book an absolute delight in my life. I sometimes wondered if herself would be as playful as Elizabeth, or as sarcastic as Mr Bennett. The playfulness and liveliness of Elizabeth, especially after her mutual engagement with Darcy always makes me smile ear to ear, not to mention her last letter to her aunt Mrs Gardiner, that must count as one of my favourite moment in the whole book, as she justified herself to be the happiest women, as Jane only smiles but she laughs.
Another pleasure reading Austen must be the picture she depicted in her book of the contemporary society, the importance of social status, the law of heritage where the fortune of one would lay either on being the eldest son of a gentleman or marry for money. We see constant proof of it, as Wickham and Colonel Fitzwilliam though both felt attached to Elizabeth, chose to pursue richer girls of fortune, and both Lady Catherine and Lady Darcy had married to the untitled but wealthy gentleman. I have never known before how important it came the family of the mother in one's social status.
I also wondered if the young ladies are more accomplished than current young girls. But I do believe that over-protection or over-indulgence over these girls from young men would still very likely to result in either Lydia or Georgiana when she was to elope with Wickham.
This latest reread gave me the confidence to dive in back to the vast sea of classics, especially old classics. I am also encouraged to read more Austen, as though I have read Pride and Prejudice three times, I have never read anything from Austen but this. Maybe next time, I will try Sense and Sensibility. ...more "
