Coraline
by
Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.
Why do you think that different audiences (adults and children) think of Coraline in terms of different genres (horror and adventure)? Identify specific examples from the text that position it as a fantasy, a fairy tale, an adventure story, and/or a horror story. (You may need to research genre tropes to help answer this question)
Harris' book is referred to as horror as well, but is also a psychological thriller and crime novel. Besides the fact that Coraline and The Silence of the Lambs have different audience age groups, how are they different in relation to horror?
What stories have you read that are similar to Coraline? What do they have in common? Which aspects of Coraline do you find that are unique to the story? In other words, these are the elements of the story that separate Coraline from other stories you have read.
What can Coraline teach us about childhood today? About parenting? About families? How do these lessons relate to your own experience?
