It actually started quite well. Sadie dan Carter berusaha mengumpulkan kembali 3 bagian mantera untuk membangkitkan kembali Ra. They needed to do this to prevent Apophis, the Lord of Chaos, from rising again. And of course, it was not an easy task for them. Tidak hanya Desjardin, ada tokoh baru, seorang penyihir dari Rusia, Vladimir Menshikov, yang *as usual* berkeinginan menguasai dunia and all those stuffs. Maka Sadie dan Carter pun bertualang, dari House of Brooklyn ke London, ke Rusia, ke Mesir, and of course, to Du’at. Fighting monsters, casting spells, you name it.

Now here’s my comment. Somehow, two third of the book went slow. Yep, there are a lot of actions here. Tapi tetep saja, saya merasa banyak sekali hal-hal dan detail yang tidak penting. Too many new names, too many new gods. Dan di antara para tokoh baru yang berdesak-desakan tersebut, love story-nya si Sadie yang sedang had a crush with one of the new characters but at the same time still have that feeling for Anubis juga ikut menyempilkan diri. Sementara si Sadie sibuk sendiri dengan pikiran aku-harus-memilih-siapa, Carter malah semacam digantung gitu nasibnya. Well, bukan cuma tentang this love-story thing sih. Dari apa yang mereka lalui, apa yang mereka lakukan, sepertinya di buku ini Sadie menjadi lebih dominan. Jujur, bagi saya sendiri pun semenjak buku pertama, karakter Sadie lebih menarik bagi saya. Sarkastis dan cuek gitu. Cool lah untuk ukuran a thirteen-year old girl. Tapi disini, kesannya Sadie terus yang jadi penyelamat. Terutama soal waktu Carter yang udah nyaris mati gitu.

Next, saya merasa agak bingung dengan House of Brooklyn yang tiba-tiba saja sudah berubah jadi semacam camp pelatihan untuk para penyihir. I actually expect to see more about these initiates.

Karena alurnya yang lambat itu, bagian-bagian akhir tau-tau udah aja. Sepertinya begitu dipaksakan untuk bisa habis. The part when they entered the House of Challeneges just went by. Belum lagi gamblingnya mereka sama Dewa Bulan (what was his name?). Padahal justru di bagian akhir, yang Sadie dan Kane took the travel to Du’at to raise Ra was like, the most important thing of this book. And Riordan compacted in into only like, 30 pages. Oh, and I hate the way Ra was being portrayed in this book. I mean, come ooooonnn… Shouldn’t he be the most important god in Egyptian mythology? But in this book, he was a joke. And I don’t find the part “Weasel” and “Zebra” to make sense at all. By the way, now I remember why I prefer Greek mythology instead of Egyptian. Kalo mitologi Mesir, terlalu banyak dewa yang dilambangkan dengan binatang. And obviously, I am NOT an animal lover.
Sementara karakter Carter berasa semakin tenggelam, karakter si Bes *yep. Another new character* malah muncul banget. Apa karena Dwarf memang punya karakter yang menonjol ya?

Buku-buku Riordan yang lain bisa saya tamatkan dalam waktu kurang dari seminggu. I even finished Son of Neptune in less than 24 hours (it’s a 500-page book, remember?). Tapi untuk buku yang ini, it took me almost THREE weeks to finish it.

Gak berarti saya gak suka sama buku ini. What keeps me reading is Sadie’s part. Suka banget sama komentar-komentar dia. Dialog dia yang tajem. But really, compared to the previous book, I don’t find this one as entertaining. ...more "
