I was initially drawn in by the endless social media chatter about how good this book is. The many good reviews and the good-looking cover led me to believe I was in for a good read but this was, sadly, not the case.

I was initially drawn in by the endless social media chatter about how good this book is. The many good reviews and the good-looking cover led me to believe I was in for a good read but this was, sadly, not the case.

Requiem, the lead character, is about as unlikable as they come. What I presume was supposed to be alluring and mysterious was actually just formulaic and cruel. While I don't expect to like a professional hitwoman, Requiem had no redeeming features at all, which makes this book a hard read. Her disdain for other mere mortals, her issues with her family and work colleagues and her boring lectures and monologues all made for an unlikeable principle character. What really jarred was the fact that the author clearly wanted you to like this beast of a woman.

When a story is being driven by the main character, and that character is distinctly one-dimensional and unlikable, you end up falling back on the plot. Sadly, the plot is riddled with holes that I just couldn't shake. This is a professional hitwoman with a day job? A father in a care home? A house that's guarded solely by shrubbery? I can suspend some disbelief for a light-hearted crime-slash-romance but not to the degree that was needed to enjoy this novel.

The love interest, Alison...or Emily...was interesting to start with. Sadly this was ruined by the "twist" in the novel that had the only interesting bits of her character conveniently removed. Again, disbelief could not be suspended long enough to believe that the hitwoman and her team would identify the wrong person. Alison is as two-dimensional as the lead, issues with her mother and wider family, over-looked at her job but with a heart of gold. Her rise to fame in the second half of the book was convenient and ill-explained.

The worst thing about the book is the fact that the point of view changes suddenly in the middle, which I found very off-putting. The point of view switch came with an unnecessary info-dump which caused for me to start flicking through pages. The pacing initially dragged but sped up to breakneck speeds during the info-dump and then slowed again. The pacing issues along with the confusing time jumps made it confusing and had me losing interesting entirely. A strong editing hand could have pulled this book back but it seems the author was left to her own devices.

The two sex scenes in the book were just glorified power plays and both left me with a bad taste in my mouth and added to the dislike I felt for Requiem. By the end of the book I couldn't care less if they got together or not.

On a side note, confusingly, this has a sub title of The Law Game Book 1, but the associated books are by different authors and with different characters (not to mention dire cover art). There is no real explanation about the Law Game reference, I'm left to wonder if they are a series, if there will be more, what the Law Game means etc. ...more "
