WHAT A GEM!!
Side note: accidentally my third book in a row about people pretending to be men to advance in the world who also have queer romances on the side. How do I keep picking these up? Is it a sign? Should I join the army? (Joking)

One of my personal favourite queer romances in a long time! The prose was just. Ugh. Makes me want to go see buttfuck nowhere Ontario which is a weird reaction. The characters were written very well, and I found the exploration of gender and queer love to be so engaging, believable and heartbreaking. There are no strong labels on anything, experiences are nebulous for the characters in a very realistic way- like Kit and Laurie in the Air Force, Rebekah’s own trysts in the wrens, and kits gender identity. No one is ever *publicly queer*, for hundreds of historical and societal reasons, but Paylor doesn’t hold the readers hand with that- which serves to make the whole story so much more intimate and vulnerable. There’s no moment where the characters ever come out with EVERYTHING they ever did while they were parted, and this too made the characters more realistic. They kept secrets from each other, and had to slowly uncover each other’s lives over years to get the whole picture. Have I mentioned how much I loved that kit and Rebekah spent so much time apart from each other and lived whole other lives and fell for other people and got hurt and did bad things before they came back together?? ITS SO REFRESHING!! They were allowed to experience the world!!! And then come back and discover how to heal together!! I feel like I never see this happen! And the fairies. THE FAIRIES! Selkie symbolism and voices in the water!! Supernatural sense of place!! Excellent luck! Be honest.. do you think I could have been a changeling.... is there still a chance for me to be one do you think…? there’s just a hundred elements to this book that really struck a chord with me, and Paylor knocked it out of the park. Blazed through this one in like 3 sittings total and loved every second. I’m really looking forward to seeing what they come up with if they continue to write. A golden A+ sticker straight on their forehead.
