It's been two weeks since I finished this book, but I still can't put my thoughts or feelings into words. Wow. What a journey. Despite all the hype about this book, I thought I would not like it. I was sure it's not for me. I thought it'd be boring, but I was so wrong. This book was exactly what I needed to read at this point in life. It inspired me. It motivated me. It destroyed me.

Rin, the main character, is a great example of a person beating the odds. She's a war orphan from the rural south, a place which rarely results in students good enough to join the most prestigious military academy in the Empire - Sinegard. Worrying that she'd have to marry an older man just to make smuggling opium easier for her foster family, she starts working really hard to score well in exams. In the end, she makes it. She gets accepted in the Sinegard and thinks everything will change for the better. Surprisingly, things don't go as planned for her - she gets bullied by other students and teachers. Academy time does not last for too long though, because soon students are separated and sent to war.

This book is mostly a war book. It's inspired by the Second Shino-Japanese War. I think it's very important because until now, I haven't heard much about Asian history in school. Reading this book made me explore and learn more. I think that was the strongest power of this book, educating me while giving me a very fun story full of plot twists and amazing characters who I fell in love with. Shamans and gods have a very important role in this book, which I also found very interesting since it's not been part of any other books that I've read in the past. This book broke my heart. It left me speechless. After finishing it, I needed to take a long break, but I'm very looking forward to continuing with the series. I am very glad there are two books left because I am not ready to say goodbye to this world. There are so many answers that I need and I am so ready to meet some of my favourite characters again. ...more "
