James Rollins accomplishes this by explaining who everyone is the second they are introduced, even though they are definitely stated in the previous books. A brief summary of the book is that a government science lab sent out a distress call due to a severe biological outbreak. In an attempt to contain the pathogen, the lab staff blew up the station with them still inside. They also released a toxic smoke to try and contain it and kill any future carriers of the virus, but the blight kept spreading. The book is split into multiple groups that are all working toward one goal, finding the cure for the virus that was released. Group perspective changes depending on the chapter, showing that they are never one universal group. One chapter could be the group surviving in Antarctica, while the other is in South America. I think that the main message in James Rollins book is that taking on more than you can handle might end badly. I think so because the science lab was dealing with stuff that their equipment could not handle, but they still did it. Their blunders led to multiple animal and plant deaths.

I love this book due to the amazing similes that James Rollins uses throughout his book. Rollins has a surplus of similes and they are clearly his favorite use of figurative speech. He uses them in situations where you might not know what the situation looks like, or one that needs further detail. The similes help you visualize the scene. Here are some of his detailed similes used throughout the book, “They exited the tent, like a group of astronauts stepping out onto an alien landscape” (Rollins 118). Here is another good simile Rollins uses, “It chilled him to picture her venturing into that toxic miasma, wearing a self contained isolation suit, like a deep sea diver in hellish waters” (Rollins 79). This text reminds me of The Maze Runner series. It reminds me of The Maze Runner series because in both books, the groups are racing to find a cure for a disease that could harm themselves, or their friends. I personally am a big fan of both series due to their fast paced storylines. I would recommend this book to older teens, because readers need some prior knowledge of biology and science to comprehend the book. Also readers also need a deep vocabulary to fully enjoy this book, so this book would be great for high school students. ...more "
