The captain was obviously deeply overset by the defeat, but he was not a young man to be carried away by his spirits: he ought to have done better by his men than to bring them into so hopeless an action.
I wonder whether this captain will remain a character present in the story. I want to know why he was so reckless. Or maybe it’s a reflection on the desperation of his side, or maybe it’s to provide an introductory foil for Laurence.
