Rachel Allen did a great job writing the book The Revenge Playbook! It has a great message to always be there for each other. There is often a lot of drama in the real world and friends aren’t always there to help each other up when their down like they should be. Rachael did a great job of portraying why being there for your friends should be one of your top priorities.
This book is realistic fiction, and this makes the book more interesting because the reader can relate to the story in a lot of different ways. In a small town with a big high school there is a group of girls who were recently dumped by the players on the football team, because the other players made them break up with the girls, or else. They are out to get revenge by winning the traditional scavenger hunt that the football players have to complete, and they are going to steal their lucky football that they keep on display, on high guard.
There are four main characters, Liv, Peyton, Melanie Jane, and Ana. Liv is a confident girl on the dance team who is devastated that her boyfriend, Trevor, recently broke up with her because of her bad reputation. Melanie Jane is a highschool supermodel, who’s boyfriend broke up with her as well. Peyton is a sweet girl with a low self esteem and is just looking for a place to fit in. Ana is Melanie Jane’s ex-bestfriend, who is tired of the football team cracking jokes about her. Their one common interest of getting back at the football team brings them close together. The way the author described the events happening made me feel like a 5th friends taking part in all the crazy action.
Rachael used a very unique technique of switching off between character’s points of view in each chapter. This wasn’t written like it usually is, where the same story keeps happening with different points of views. In this book, it continued to go along in chronological order as the author switched between characters. I thought that this was very interesting! Although at sometimes it was confusing because the characters did not have a distinct voice, so it was difficult to understand who was who. Rachael used hilarious words and phrases such as, “flabbergasted” and “Lip balm panic attack,” to grab the reader's attention. Although, the story was extremely slow moving which made it hard for me to stay interested. A lot of the book is about the girls completing the scavenger hunt challenges, but by the time 3 out of 20 were completed, I was bored.
While some elements of the story were interesting, because of the slow moving pace, I would not recommend this book. Towards the beginning it was funny, fast moving, and interesting but then it trapped me into the rest of the book which took forever to read. This book may be better for someone looking for a book to read over a long period on the side, but I would definitely not recommend it to someone looking for a quick read. ...more "
