Holly Sinclair, a not-too-successful author, returns to the family beach house when she has no other financial alternatives. She dreads staying in the old family home. Aside from the fact that the place is falling apart and she doesn't have much in the way of funding to fix it up, her sister was killed in the coastal town years ago and Holly doesn't really want to be there.

But given no other choices, Holly returns and finds herself befriending Gail, a realtor who wants to sell the place, Serena, who was a friend of her mother. When the attorney handling her family's finances advances her the money for repairs, she hires a local handyman. He seems somehow familiar but she isn't sure why. Holly is a bit afraid to be in the house alone, sensing another presence. After having psychic Serena in she's still not very comfortable there. She decides to explore it all and discovers Jade, a runaway teen living in her attic. Jade has traveled to the small town because she owns a necklace that came from that town and is trying to discover more about her own past. Holly breaks down and allows Jade to stay with her, despite her trepidation.

Jade finds a job working for the Carmichael family, wealthy scions of the town. Holly does not like the family--she and her sister worked to help cater parties at their mansion and Holly's sister died in a guest house fire on their property. Holly knew her sister had 'a thing' with the family heir, even though he was to marry someone else. She's never trusted him.

Holly is having difficulty coming up with the plot for a new book that her agent will agree to sell. The fact that there is a creepy busker in town who seems to be stalking her doesn't help and she's not happy about Jade's job with the Carmichaels. As the paths of all the characters come together at Carmichael house party, danger explodes and Holly and Jade learn secrets that help explain past mysteries.

Recommended for those who enjoy a good mystery, and of course a great book to read at the beach!
