In the middle of 2013 or 2014, my mumma, Ini and many people of my my group wanted to read this book. And as with any other book, I was forced to read this too, courtesy Ini :/ But the ploy failed, as many disliked the war scenes and discontinued the novel. And with time, I drifted apart from my lovely group. Many reasons, actually. Studies, work, cinema etc.. But I'm not gonna lie : Read Runners is my favorite place on earth, except that it isn't a place :D Okay I'm digressing. Back to the point, I didn't have much time to read books. But whenever I had, I read random books and didn't even finish them. Then my eyes fell upon this behemoth. It looked more of a challenge than a reading experience, initially. But as I kept reading, I was pulled into it. What I thought of as a challenge, became a passion. I started spending hours and more on it everyday. Finally I finished it a day before. The experience is really like watching God. So pure, surreal and thrilling.

Of all the books I've read, I always regarded Shadow of the Wind as the best for it's plotting and storytelling flair. But War and Peace nearly managed to dethrone Shadow of the Wind. But, as War and Peace was written in 19th century, the pacing is really a tad slower. Still, it's too good to be second.

Plot : I've had the fortune of reading a short story of Mr. Tolstoy in school, as part of the curriculum. The plot of this book faintly reminded me of that short story. Nothing to take away from this classic, though. Interesting, arresting and way too simple to any layman like me, it still spews fire on the then Russian Czars.

Characters : A ton of them, but mainly 3-4 lead the book. And they really infuse life into the book. No favorite character, though. Everyone is as important and good as the next.

Writing : The best aspect of the book, hands down. Tolstoy writes simple lines but they're written so aptly and beautifully, that every line is a cracker and every metaphor a chocolate (excuse my food obsession).

Last year, i finished Midnight's Children after an year and half approximately. And now, War and Peace took only 20 days. It's a strange world, eh? ...more "
