This right here is the reason why I love me a good office romance and this was without a doubt a good office romance. With the first book everything felt a little too quick off the bat— the banter, the way Zahra was so quick with the sass and the talking back to Rowan who was technically her boss and just how quickly they fell into their relationship. I mean don’t get me wrong I love that, but sometimes it was a little too unbelievable.

With Declan and Iris? It felt perfect and balanced and it came from the fact that there was history between them — strong and deep and yes okay maybe a little too codependent but they spent years working together. There was a solid foundation for their relationship and for the story unfolds. The banter, the sass, the way Iris teased Declan, the way she handled him and didn’t take any of her shit…it all just fits if that makes sense.

And don’t get me started on the characters themselves. Iris was so fun — strong and capable and lovely. She and her plant babies deserve the world honestly. She was someone who still carried a lot of the hurts from her past, who carried a bruised heart damaged not just by a cruel father, but by the torment her learning difference incurred from other people, but who keep going and pushing no matter what. She was so deviously efficient and her knowing how to deal with Declan killed me every time lol. The level of sass this woman unleashed on this man … Also, I did not know I needed her friendship with Cal, but oh my god yes!

Now Declan … oh Declan. First, did anyone just melt over the fact that Declan knew about Iris from the beginning and then did everything in his power to help her without bringing any attention to it? The demanded font, sending voice messages and notes … this is a man who is not known for his sweet and cuddly side. He exerted effort because he cared for Iris, because he loved her. I think that’s why that last fight with Iris hurt so much. He showed he was capable of kindness - stilted kindness yes, kindness edged in hurt and the memory of an asshole father, but kindness nonetheless. So to see him turn on her like that, to give in to the hurt and the rage he felt against his father …it was visceral and painful and it had to happen for him to move forward and away from the memory of his father.

Seriously, so far this is my favorite book in the series. ...more "
