The original cover art of the series turned me away too. It felt cheap somehow. The premise seemed a little shallow. The idea of a “litRPG” sounded like the opposite of what I wanted from a book.

I was wrong and I’m glad I came to realize that. I’m happy that the new traditionally published covers made me pick up the first book in the store and read a few pages. I didn’t buy it that day but it hung out in the back of my mind. I kinda wanted to see where it was gonna go. So I went back and bought it.

Four books later and I can’t get enough. Book 1 got me to say “okay I’ll bite.” Book 2 grabbed me by the collar and proved there’s much more to this series than I realized. Book 3 made it clear that Matt is a certifiable madman with an incredibly active imagination and this one—book 4, The Gate of the Feral Gods—pulled me onto a rollercoaster without seatbelts or brakes that I can’t imagine getting off of until the series is over.

I can think of at least four different events in just this book alone that I’ll remember vividly from now until the end of time. Matt has a gift for using the tools and rules he’s crafted in such inventive ways that, in this book especially, always tend to culminate in jaw dropping set pieces which make it so difficult not to turn to my girlfriend every twenty pages and say, “Listen to how crazy this is!” I saw the cover of this thing before it released. Carl and Donut fall out of the sky at some point, right? I was excited to see how that happened but oh boy did I not know the half of it.

Matt Dinniman is a creative mastermind. The world he’s crafted is a pleasure to behold. The humor hits far more often than it misses. I’ve laughed out loud at these books many times and I don’t generally do that, even in books that bill themselves as humorous. And then at the same time, every bit of backstory we get about Carl (particularly his relationship with Donut before the creation of the titular dungeon) manages to pull on my heartstrings in ways that I didn’t think was possible. The fact that I’m so emotionally invested in the relationship between a guy and his ex-girlfriend’s newly talking cat is genuinely absurd but now I can’t imagine a future where I go the rest of my life without finding out how things turn out for them.

This series is incredible. The Gate of the Feral Gods is my favorite so far and I have a strong feeling it may not stay at number one for all that long. You might see the high ratings in here and think it’s a fluke or the result of some particularly enthusiastic and generous fans. They aren’t. This series is pure unadulterated fun and it’s got so much heart. Yes, the books are that good.
