"Scott pilgrim is very modern, probably taking place around 20010, and in Toronto, Canada. This book has very modern rules and expectations like having a job once you're out of school, not cheating, and other everyday expectations. Scott's moral universe is the typical good guy morals (I.e. Be nice to other, help when you can) but he later gains the power of self respect, thus adding to his morals." — May 30, 2017 09:16AM

Because there are 7 exes there's a lot of symbolism with the numbers associated with each charter. The 1st evil ex always has one eye covered, the 3rd is part of a 3 piece band. 4 is a half ninja, 4 being half of 8, the total number of boyfriends.
