Almost 13 year old Jeremy Fink and his closest friend Lizzy embark on a great adventure when he gets a box from his dad a couple weeks before his birthday that has the meaning of life inside of it. Unfortunately Jeremy's dad died in a car accident a couple of years earlier so he becomes determined to open it with the four keys that it requires. A letter comes with it saying that a friend of his dad had unfortunately lost the keys so Jeremy had to get out of his comfort zone to find them. Lizzy convinced Jeremy to go to the friend of his dad and search his office for the keys. They got caught and later found out that they would be spending the rest of their summer with this Mr. Oswald guy and delivering packages for him. He owned many bizarre things for a pawnshop owner. Jeremy had almost lost hope in finding the keys in time for his birthday. First day on the job, a limo showed up to drive them to Mr. Oswald's house! After many deliveries with many lessons learned in addition to the deliveries, it was time for Mr. Oswald to move to Florida and say goodbye. He decided to let Lizzy and chose one thing to take before he left. Lizzy decided to take a doll and Jeremy took a suitcase filled with "flotsam and jetsam". They thought it would be a good idea because there might be the keys they've been looking for in there. When they got back to their houses, they sorted through the entire suitcase and found 3 out of 4 keys for the box. Jermey was disappointed but accepted that he would not find the keys before his birthday in a couple of days. Lizzy and Jeremy went to the State Fair like they had promised his grandma and performed their hula hoop duet. The day of his birthday they had a nice pick-nick and he opened presents. Surprisingly, Lizzy gave him the fourth key she had kept from him so he could open the box! They rowed a small boat out in the middle of the lake and he put the four keys inside the box and received the best birthday present he could ever receive from his dad.

I think that the theme for this book would be not lose hope. There are many times in the book when Jeremy loses his hope. He believes that he should stop looking for the keys because he knows that he won't find all four of them before his 13th birthday. " How am I going to open this box if I can't look for the keys because I will be too busy picking up garbage on the West Side Highway or planting flowers in some church garden?" (Mass, pg. 93) He is clearly losing hope in this point of the book. You can't ever lose hope because you never know what might workout for you. Even when Jeremy started losing hope he came through in the end of the book alongside Lizzy. She helped him out and returned his hope with the fourth key they had been looking for. ...more "
