Good LORD this book was intense— there was so, so much that needed unpacking and I think this book did a solid job at trying to explain everything. It was a LOT of telling and not as much showing, which is understandable given Oh how I’ve missed SJM.

Good LORD this book was intense— there was so, so much that needed unpacking and I think this book did a solid job at trying to explain everything. It was a LOT of telling and not as much showing, which is understandable given the need to answer a ton of multiverse questions. Not going to lie, I got a little bit lost with some of the lore and the revelations but enough is understandable that you get the gist. Maybe that just goes to show how truly insane and brilliant SJM’s mind is. Seriously, it’s beyond me.

I literally had my jaw on the floor for 90% of the 800-something pages of this book. Every other page there was some gaggery going on with someone’s storyline. I will never not be impressed by her ability to write so many complex, compelling character arcs that feel truly real all at the same time. Wow, wow, wow.

As far as the multiverse goes, what a crazy (and also heartwarming?) introduction to it. Bryce, Nesta, and Azriel’s interactions stole the show for me. AND DON’T GET ME STARTED ON EMBER HEALING NESTA’S MOTHER WOUNDS IN THAT BONUS CHAPTER. BRB CRYING, THROWING UP, ETC. Watching their worlds collide and getting to see more of Nesta and Azriel’s characters was literally everything and more. Like let’s get Cassian a gun stat. Matter of fact, let’s get Aelin and Rowan in here and hand over two glocks and some Red Bull.

I could go on about this book forever. But the last thing I’ll put out into the ether is this: Lidia Cervos, the woman you are… Lidia’s storyline was perhaps the most compelling of the millions of things going on in this book. She is the embodiment of resilience and strength— it makes complete sense that she comes from the insanely powerful bloodline that’s been hinted at. I can’t wait to see where this goes next, and I’m so happy to see her finally relieved of her abuser’s power over her. Once again, what a woman.

I appreciate that it ended neatly after the shitshow of a cliffhanger that was HOSAB. I feel like I can rest easy while I count the days until we get more SJM content. But as of now … I can confidently say that she still NEVER misses. And as long as she’s writing…. I’m sure as hell reading. ...more "
