Florence was quite curious about her cousin James who was very ill after his sister had died, he too was also an orphan. Sophia was James’s sister who had died of a bad fall from the roof when James and her had been playing together. Sophia and James were orphans, their mother had died during birth, and their father had died because of sickness. Florence climbed the second floor of stairs and stood in front of James room but didn’t go in. Florence turned around and at the bottom of the stairs to the third floor she noticed the attic, aunt had said there was nothing but rooms of the servants up there, Florence figured that would give her something to do so she went to go explore the rooms. She found the last door, it was hard to open it, In the last room she found many things like chipped plates, she found a chest full of Sophia’s dolls and dresses and said she was going to keep the doll she had liked, Florence heard laughing again and then she had met her cousin Sophia, Sophia and Florence had a conversation, and then Sophia let Florence keep the doll and dress she had picked out as a token of their friendship. On Sophia’s death date she had told Florence to put the dress on so that she could meet her other cousin James, Florence had refused but still had found herself obeying Sophia. She had gone into James’s room and James had thought Florence was Sophia so he got scared, then Florence was his cousin and she left. On Sophia’s death date she took Florence to go see her grave and after they went back to Crutchfield Hall Sophia took Florence to James’s room to remove the charm. Even though Florence had refused Sophia was very strong so she went into James’s room and removed the charm, when she removed the charm that kept Sophia out Sophia went in and asked James many questions like what day it was, and who was stronger than who. When he answered sobbing Sophia dragged him out of bed onto the roof and Florence ran after them. Sophia wanted to do what James promised to do if Sophia did it a year ago (walk across the roof and touch the 2 chimneys and come back) The same thing happened, Sophia tried to force him and James pushed her off the roof (the way she died). James and Florence didn’t see Sophia anymore and James got out of bed and did more with Florence and their uncle more now. They were taught by a governess their uncle hired named Miss Amelia. They went outside to draw and ended up going to see Sophia’s grave, James drew Sophia’s grave, when he was done he Florence noticed Sophia was in the picture, they got frightened and left. This book connects with the novel theme because in the book Florence gets haunted by her dead cousin Sophia, some of the characters are scared of Sophia’s ghost, and because many servants are scared to work at Crutchfield hall because they believe it’s haunted. I recommend The Ghost of Crutchfield Hall to people that like a slight scare and a spooky mystery. I think that The Ghost of Crutchfield Hall was a good story that was sad and spooky, I liked Florence’s personality and how she was very different from Sophia even though they looked much alike. I think that i’ll be quite interested in the other books that Mary Downing Hahn has written. ...more "
