(don't misunderstand me... smut has its place, think "Lipstick Jungle"). I think the sex is tossed in to engage the Nora Roberts audience (as that is what she's famous for, right? Her romance novels). For me, the sex detracts from what otherwise is an interesting series with characters that keep me coming back for more. Am I reading a romance novel with mystery tossed in or is this intended as an intelligent murder-mystery series?! Make up your mind Nora Roberts, I mean, J.D. Robb (what's up with authors "writing under other names" anyway?). Ok, maybe I'm too serious... I just came off of reading the Dr. Kay Scarpetta series (Patricia Cornwell) which doesn't focus on sex but rather PC relies on her immense talent for writing scary-as-hell fiction with engaging characters (I love Marino... more on Cornwell in another forum).

In this futuristic series (it's not SciFi-ish), Lt. Eve Dallas and her bad-ass Irishman, Roarke, are polar opposites in many ways yet both had bad childhoods (understatement) that connected them on a level others wouldn't relate to hence their soulmate connection. Oh yeah, that and the physical attraction thing... they tear each others clothes off every other page (ok, I'll shut-up). Somerset is Roarke's butler but he's like a father figure to Roarke (their Ireland ties run deep). With Roarke being filty rich and gorgeous to boot aka a most eligible bachelor, Somerset views Dallas as unworthy (in looks and career) to be Roarke's woman. Peabody is Dallas's sidekick cop and she's a hoot. Chief Feeney is Dallas's superior and one of her closest comrades. He's a simple family guy... to Dallas, he's like the brother she never had. Outrageous Mavis is Dallas's best friend (a former jailbird.. they met when Dallas arrested her for....) she's "colorful". This one's for Amy... Mavis has the fashion sense of Gina Ryan. (rearrhhhh... hiss)

I'm on book #7 of 30-something in this "In Death" series and am committed to see it through. For me, it's all about the characters... I like this bunch so will stay tuned to see what happens next :)

Ok, let's play... who-would-play-what-character-in-the-movie-version. As you'll see below, I'm kinda stumped on this one...
