I've never read anything by the author and had no preconceived notions or exceptions. I even ignored the early warning signs when I flicked it opened and was confronted with pages of praise and platitudes, usually an iron-clad guarantee that the book will be utter fucking shite. Let's just say it'll be the last time I ignore that.
This book is pretty bad. I really was hoping for something better. Basically, the 'sparkle' has gone from some doll's marriage and she hasn't been filled-in for a while; queue mysterious stranger (who turns out to be a war criminal, or something?) who 'fills her in' and then the whole thing goes tits up and she moves to England to escape her shame. From then on it's just a pile or boring crap about immigrants having a tough time. Oh yeah, all the men are cunts as well. How original. The characters are far too one dimensional, the dialogue is unrealistic and overly simple to the point where it reads like a children's novel at times. And the plot is just tacked together. I mean, at one point these three drunken Eastern Europeans - 3 total stranger - calls to her home (in rural Ireland) and demands that she comes with them. And she does. Yeah, that's what I'd do if 3 complete drunken strangers pulled up outside my gaff in a van and told me to come with them. Her husband's in the house and everything, and doesn't even do anything - he even answered the door to them! On the plus side it was interesting to see what kind of nonsense is making the best sellers list. If something this bad has mass market appeal then I can only assume most people are fucking illiterate, and/or brain dead. I would advise any struggling authors to read this, because if something this bad can get not just published, but sell fucking loads, then don't give up hope. ...more "
