Amina al-Sirafi was once a pirate, and now is reluctant to reveal all to hear daughter who asks why she can't go to school in the city. One day, she is visited by an old woman who seems to know exactly who she's dealing with - and she has a proposal.

First off, we have an older main character. She has been there, done that - which is honestly refreshing. Even when a popular fantasy novel is not ya, often the people in there are mostly young, just starting out in their journeys. Whereas Amina thought the fun part of her life is over, and now she devotes herself to quiet joys, like seeing her daughter growing up.
Of course, this book starts with a challenge, and Amina brings her old crew back together for one last hurrah.

I'd go so far as class Amina as a disabled person, she has an old wound in her knee that causes her trouble. And different other characters have suffered various injuries that impact them long-term as well, a few of them simply being marked by their life on the sea.

We have exactly one white person in this book. Everyone else is either a person of colour or a supernatural being. As it befits pirates, they come from all over the world, all have different stories to tell, come from different cultural backgrounds.
We have a first person narrator, and a religious one at that, which I found interesting because a few days back I said in my review for Coup de Grâce that I had my problems with the first person narrator who has views on people not sharing her faith. Here, I had none of these problems. Amina is a muslima, but recognises that people can have other faiths and be decent people. Likewise that other muslims can be assholes. She does not press her faith on other people or judge them when they pray differently. She judges them by their other deeds.

As someone who grew up with fairytales from around the world and was quite a big fan of Sindbad for a while, I felt the connection to those tales and am excited to see where the further adventures take us.

Be prepared for quite a bit of violence and gore, and also for magic when picking this up. ...more "
