Autistic people are not easy to portray in a novel. In this book, Christopher has Asperger’s syndrome, though it is never specified or stated. Christopher interests are precise, he disliked the colors yellow and brown and likes the color red.While his interaction with others is limited, the author uses Christopher’s admiration for mystery to lead him into adventures. By collecting facts that relate to the death of the dog, he soon finds out the truth about his parents lives. Christopher is the perfect candidate to portray the narrator and the main character of the novel. The author uses the narrator's innocence to create sadness and comedy throughout the story. Christopher deals with the facts and detail, but he hides his emotions which make him confused and alarmed. Christopher shows us how he overcomes conflicts that affect his daily life. Imagine having the idea that you will never see your mother again and then realizing it was all a lie. We really enjoyed reading this book because of all of the different plot twists and turn of events.
This book teaches you a lot more things than just vocabulary and reading skills. “It teaches you a lot of valuable lessons of life.”(Andres Gutierrez) “I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about them.” (Mark Haddon, 13).
