When a nuclear bomb seemingly dropped on United States, Eli and his family were rushed to the shelter by their billionaire father, Rex. However, in the mayhem, Eli's twin brother Eddy was shut out of the compound, leaving him alone in the outside world. Only Eli, Lexie (his older sister), Therese (his younger sister), and the parents remain. The shelter also contains three Supplements, children that Rex is planning to use for food later on. Eli, still grieving over Eddy after six years, wonders if Eddy is still alive, and is determined to find out. He soon finds out his father's office has access to the internet, which the entire rest of the shelter does not. This confirms his suspicions of trickery on Rex's part. Eli scours throughout the compound, finding clues and cracking codes to unlock the passcode to the door leading to the outside world. Will he uncover if Rex's dark secret? Will he find out if Eddy is alive? Read The Compound to find out.
Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. It was an interesting concept to create into a book, and lived up to my expectation. The rising action and climax had me on the edge of my seat, waiting to find out what happens next. It also provided realistic concerns and problems, such as the shortage of food and Eli's mom's pregnancy. The Supplements added an element of mystery and horror, which provided a break from the main story line once in a while. The ending was the perfect cliffhanger, and I would change nothing about it. However, the parts of the book filled with melancholy, even though their significance, did not interest me at all. This is why I would rate "The Compound" 4 stars out of 5. To add on, this book reminded me of The City of Ember, with its similar, post-apocalyptic style and main plot to escape the confines of an area. Overall, this book is enjoyable to a wide variety of audiences, and I thoroughly recommend it. ...more "
