It feels like we keep learning more and more about the world of Nevermoor with each book, but that at the same time you feel like you've only just scratched the surface of the world.

The book is titled Hollowpox and that is in some ways the main plot of the book. Wunimals of Nevermoor start to come down with a terrible disease that causes them to act like unnimals, attack those nearby and then fall into comas. While this is a major plot point throughout the book, it is hardly the only strand of plot going on here.

We learn more about the Wunderous Society (Wunsoc) in this book, both the good, the bad, and the ugly of it. The learn more about the reason why the Wunsoc was founded, how it has changed in its mission slightly, and also that it is like any normal organization. It is a mix of people with very different motivations and personalities. We have those who are odious like Baz (who we've seen in other books), those who seem to care little about the means as long as they achieve the desired end, and that there are people with biases and prejudices even within this society. That's not to say it's all bad, it is just a mixed bag.

It is also not a universally loved society as there do appear to be people who are deeply suspicious of the secretive nature of the Wunsoc. Of course this is due to the response to the Hollowpox and could also be more due to the prejudice that people seem to have against Wunimals which is another theme explored in the book.

You also get to see Morrigan begin to learn what it means to be a Wundersmith and introduced the Wunderous School levels of Wunsoc. Of course over the course of the book you see how limited what Morrigan knows compared to the memories she's seeing of past Wundersmiths, in something called the Ghostly Hours.

There is also the kind of looming threat or concern about Ezra Squall and a villain that is perhaps even greater than Ezra himself. This has been hinted at in previous books, but you get a bit more detail on what that may look like in this book.

So there are many strands going on in the book. I'm not even sure I've quite hit all of them. However, I felt like the plot was fairly easy to understand despite all of the various aspects of the plot moving together. I wish I could say everything gets resolved, but that's not really the case. In some ways that is the one complaint I would have about the book. The ending left a lot unsaid and unresolved. I kind of wish we got to see some of the reactions and fallout from the last chapter in the book... but I guess we'll have to wait for the next one.

Another thing is did this book hit home considering the COVID pandemic. A lot of the atmosphere of the book felt eerily similar to what went on during the pandemic. The panic, the protests, the lockdowns, the mistrust and suspicion of those trying to deal with the pandemic. You would have thought this was written in the midst of the pandemic, but it would have been finished before any of that had happened since it was set to be released early in 2020, but was pushed back a few times before releasing in the fall.

I've really enjoyed this series. I enjoy getting to learn more about Nevermoor,. I enjoy seeing Morrigan grow and develop as a Wundersmith, but feel a bit sad that she's not anywhere near the Wundersmiths of the past or even where she should be under normal circumstances at her age. I did get a bit frustrated that Wunsoc was a bit shady at times in the book, but honestly that's been hinted at earlier in previous books and while it is a bit disappointing, it wasn't surprising.

The ending was probably my biggest complaint because it just left so many questions. However, I guess it just makes me look forward to the next book, which is sad because it's not even coming out until October. ...more "
