I am doing my book report on the silmarillion. The silmarillion is the History of middle-earth and how all things came into being. This book consists of 264 pages and was published in 1977 and was written by J.R.R Tolkien. The intended audience of this book is for Tolkien’s older fans and loves deep, rich lore of Arda. This story would not make sense if it was set in any other time period other than it is now. It just wouldn’t make any sense. The main good characters are Eru (Illuvitar, or “the one”), Manwe, Fingolfin, The Noldur, The Valar. The Evil characters are Ungoliant, Melkor (Morgoth).

Eru, or Illuvitar, was the one who created all things. He first created the Noldur which are the first descendants of Illuvitar. The weapons of the Noldur are pretty much just Musicale cords. One of the Noldur, Melkor, was a little bit different than the others. He liked to adventure and was also curious about a lot of things. Melkor was his name. So he journeyed into what the noldur call “the Void” and found himself lost. What he learned from the journey was the dark powers and how powerful they were. So Melkor turned away from the light and Eru’s teachings. When Illuvitar confronted him, he was Embarrassed and shameful so he fled into Arda to hopefully escape the Noldur. There he made his unholy fortress of Angband and there he made his unholy minions the balrogs, orcs and other unholy spirits and bodys of the world. Melkors minions pillaged and burned everything that were in their path.

The Noldur( or the Valar) finally found Melkor and found out about his wrong doings. So they punished him with the power of the light and chained him up for 3 ages. Once those ages were finished he would stand trial to decide what the valar would do to them next. In that time when Melkor (Morgoth) was chained up everything started growing back again. Arda was finally regrowing back to its original self. Everywhere but one place grew back that place was Angband, Morgoths stronghold. Morgoths servants, Balrogs, Orcs, ect. Did not stop doing wrong there and his army started to build up overtime, one by one, Morgoths army grew. The Valar found out about Morgoths Fortresss and invaded it killing off every orc and balrog that laid inside that damned fortress. Or so they thought. The Valar did not dare to venture down into the darkest depths of Angband. There the Balrogs slept awaiting for their master to return to them.

Once Morgoth’s three ages were over he was set free and he was lost and did not know his way back to Angband. All that time in the cells of the ancient Valar city to the south Morgoth wanted vengeance. He wanted to take out all of the Valar. And he knew exactly how. Morgoth traveled to the east where a terrible spider laid. Her name was Ungoliant. Morgoth made a promise to Ungoliant saying that if she helps him take down the trees of the Valar then he will feed her until her stomach is full of everything she consumed. So Ungoliant accepted the deal and traveled with Morgoth and thus they went, traveled south to the trees of the Valar. One reason why Morgoth picked Ungoliant is because she has intense strength and wherever they went Ungoliant shrouded them with a shield of darkness and shadow.

Morgoth and Ungoliant finally arrived at the trees of the Valar and Ungoliant fed, she fed until there was nothing left to feed on. She sucked the power of the two trees right out of them and because of her poison from her blackened, sharp fangs, the trees died. Morgoth finally had his vengeance. But Ungoliant was not full, Morgoth replied we shall pillage and you shall eat villagers and their houses until you are satisfied. So they did, every town they passed through they ate everything in their path. When Ungoliant ate, she grew and she grew so massive that even Morgoth, the Evil of all things, was frightened. There were no villages left to pillage in that area. Ungoliant was not full yet but morgoth had nothing left to give her. Ungoliant asked for the jewels that morgoth took from one of the houses. But Morgoth refused saying you shall not have the Silmarills for they give me more power than ever. So Ungoliant not approving of his answer spun him in razer sharp webs and almost strangled him to death. His cries, terrible and frightening, can still be heard even now in the valley of death just west of Angband. His cries were so loud and powerful that his minions heard them deep within the dungeons of Angband. The Balrogs (demons of the ancient world) has come to his aid with their fiery whips and dark steel battle axes they freed morgoth and pushed Ungoliant away. So she fled. It has been said that Ungoliant has been so famished that she had eaten herself and died. Morgoth now is recovering from his wounds and the silmarills are now in his helmet and he is more powerful than he ever was. But still is weak.

The Valar heard of this incident and because the trees dead they are in a loss of power and are weak. So they made the powerful elves called the Elda, or “The wise ones”. ...more "
