Scarlett and Lukas you are SO dear to me. I love them as characters, their dynamic together, and I have been rooting for them the entire time.

Scarlett and Lukas you are SO dear to me. I love them as characters, their dynamic together, and I have been rooting for them the entire time.

Scarlett is complex, multilayered and so endearing. She’s also witty, driven, and way too hard on herself. I thoroughly enjoyed reading her growth and see her come full circle going back to enjoying diving and to have found a voice for herself.

Lukas, the mysterious and serious boy who turned out to be the one of the most romantic and thoughtful MMC’s I’ve ever read. I truly can’t speak highly enough of him - his attentiveness to Scarlett and how he seems to be the first person at Stanford to truly see her as she is.

And Penelope, I have a love-hate relationship with her. Initially I thought, there’s no way someone could have been in such a long term relationship then be so nonchalant about it ending? It was very reminiscent to me of Margo from TATBILB. But then again, it made for an interesting dynamic between her and Scarlett. After the incident with Carissa, I wondered if it would have been more interesting for Scarlett to not have been forthcoming about what she was told and to instead have her move forward in the story not knowing whether she could trust Pen or not. Regardless, in the end I thought that the way Penelope’s story was much more fitting and also satisfying in the end.

While Deep End is a romance, I love how it also centred on themes of trauma, burnout, trials and triumphs, and academic/work progression.

And although I very much enjoyed the story, I do feel like after the first few encounters with Scarlett and Lukas that the story dragged on a bit (which is why I could not give this book 5 stars). Also, there were just some stylistic choices that were not exactly my favourite such as the frequent use of () brackets to demonstrate internal dialogue and also the period where italics were used so often. Though those things also fit the story and were easy to look past.
