When I first read about Newspeak, I didn't think much of it. I read it as "News-speak" and thought it was simply used within the press. When we get our first glimpse at what Winston does for a living, that's when I really paid attention to Newspeak and realized: BB's goal with "New-speak" is to shrink the vocabulary! And of course this chapter makes directly addresses this and makes it very plain with Syme even saying the number of words in this "language" shrinks yearly. This quote is insane to me. And what's not being said is amazing to. I think we can be certain that BB's goals go even further, not just with an inability to express thoughtcrime, but an inability to formulate thoughts complex enough to amount to thoughtcrime!
