Sebastion Junger is a journalist and an author, in this book he goes to the kongreal valley and stays there with a platoon of men who he follows around. This book is a non fiction book and can be very meaningful to the reader.
The book takes place mostly in the Kongreal Vally and shows the horrors of modern war, Sebastion along with the men he is with are stationed at a base called RESTREPO, named after a medic who had died. Junger at times can be very descriptive throughout the book because he video taped most of it so he could remember everything clearly. He is always mentioning valuables and gear that the men have and tells the reader what value it has to them and each other.
In the first few chapters of the book it mentions that the men who are stationed at RESTREPO see more combat then any World War two soldier did. This is because the fighting is constant there, although it is mostly small skirmishes, it is still very stressful on the men. Most of the men who are stationed at RESTREPO can not live normal lives at home with out intense medication. For some of the men that does not even work and they feel the need to go back to the most violent place on earth. Throughout the book Junger describes firefights, the men emotions and his own. The book is full of action but is also pretty graphic as well, I would recommenced this to someone who wants to learn about the war in Afghanistan and the men who fight in it. If you do not like an intense graphic book I would not recommended this.
I felt this book was well written and very touching at points, it shows the weaker side of some of the toughest men in the world. I also enjoyed the book because after I finished it I saw a movie that was based on the same base, RESTREPO. The movie was called RESTREPO and was a documentary about the base and the men who fought there. The book was a great one, it was action packed and kept me interested throughout it. ...more "
