This book is about Karana, a young girl in a Indian tribe on an island. She is 12 years of age when a ship comes to her island carrying men wanting to hunt the otters on the grounds. At first, her father(tribe leader) does not allow them to, but then agrees with the men on the condition that they give the indian people gems and jewelry. When everything was done, there was an insufficient pay of jewels therefore there is a fight between the two people and her father dies. Later that year another ship comes and takes all of the tribe with them but when Karana gets on, her younger brother is still on the island. She leaps off and swims to him. And in the middle of the year, Ramo (younger brother), dies from a pack of wild dogs on the island. Karana is now alone and fighting for her life to survive.
The theme of this book is survival of the fittest. This is the theme because Karana shows that even though she has no mother,father,brother,or sister anymore, she can still fend for herself and survive on the island. She makes weapons and also makes a home for herself to live in to survive everything life throws at her. She even kills a few wild dogs to protect herself.
Some people that may like this book would be people who enjoy real life situations of survival. This book really does deliver when you look at it through that retrospect. The author really writes this story well. He writes it in a first person point of view so that you know what all of this feels like form Karana’s point of view. Compared to other books that I have read, the book is very easy to read and comprehend. This book is so well written in a way that literally anyone can understand that it is such an amazing piece of literature.
ON page 1 of the book it says “At last in the rising sun it became what it really was........a red ship with two red sails.” this shows how good the author is a t imagery showing the reader what the ship looks like.
This book’s impact on me is very large but simple. It shows me that even through anything that happens through life that I can always keep going. This book's author impacts me because it seems as though he is speaking right to me when he wrote this book in the way that he did. I enjoyed literally everything about this book. I enjoyed how easily I read it and how easily I could comprehend it. The words and imagery was very exact and helped me understand the story in a new light. ...more "
