I find that some of the most critical reviews are ones that say that it drags at some points in the book, while that is true I think the great examples and illustrations overlook the dull moments of the book. For me and others I think it is a book that I am going to come back to from time to time and reflect on the sentiments in this novel. this book is that it puts the ancient teachings of Buddha in a modern context and addresses many alarming problems with modern society that are leading our world toward destruction. There were a lot of moments where my eyes glazed over, and I began reading on autopilot - I saw the words, but I wasn't really reading them. The book gives a good introduction to the various bardos, which to me was covering total new ground. The beginning gives a quick and good understanding of how we should be and conduct ourselves in a kind and loving manner.

The book incorporates other religions very well. There are analogies that can be translated to another religion's ideals. The book speaks kindly and respectfully of other religions, and could honestly be useful to the likes of Christians and Muslims alike in the way that it teaches the fundamentals of peace. Any religion alike could still learn from these peaceful teachings and that's why the book is so universal in it's brilliance. This is a must-read for anyone working wherever death is around, in order for them to gain the knowledge with which to benefit those who most need it, and to students of Buddhism with already some knowledge about its basic aspects who wish to get deeper about this tradition's powerful techniques and insights about the process of dying. The only thing that I disagree about is how tough this book is to get through. I think it is a given that books like these are going to be challenging and you are going to have read through it a few times even if you are well versed. I found it to be a great resource in understanding the complexities of a culture that we in the West are mystified by. I was happy to see that many of the reasonings and thoughts that the book has are already ones that I have made for myself to make sense of the world around me. Lot of people can’t believe reincarnation because there are no scientific proves to it. The fact is we can not understand each and every thing by our rational mind. Understanding consciousness requires a different approach. I really loved the book seeing that I am a buddhist, it gave me a greater insight in how Tibetan buddhist live and makes me want to visit Tibet sometime in my life. There also is The Tibetan book of the dead which I have yet to start reading after I finish this one. ...more "

of disposing the corpse. In Tibetan Buddhism, there are
specific practices for cremation. The crematorium or funeral
pyre is visualized as the mandala of Vajrasattva, or the Hundred
