I really like having some of the thought and story holes filled in.

Forewarning and apology here: apparently I'm in my feels about this book. I stream of consciousness wrote a pretty long review here. Sorry.

That said, Meyer matured a lot as a writer since Twilight. Bits of this writer are evident in the Jacob section of breaking dawn, but her ability to write a perspective that is other than herself (which, I suspect Bella is heavily modeled on) has grown. Edward is a cohesive fully formed person, and the morality tale aspect of the Twilight series is a lot easier to deal with when seeing through the eyes of the person who believes in it, rather than those he is trying (badly) to impose that moral system upon. The book is not just an apologist tome, tho I think it dips it's toes into being an Edward apologist work.

Meyer does a better job of world building in this book-- it's neither too scant like 1-3 nor too forced with expansion and exposition like 4. I enjoyed learning more of the rules and history of the world in an organic way. I also REALLY enjoy the idea of powered (gifted) humans in the world. It's hinted at in the other books, but actually seeing Edward experience both Charlie and Renee's minds is probably my favorite thing about the book, and the best reason for it to exist.

Building from that, Meyer brings up the idea of Renee as a bad, possibly abusive (via neglect), parent. Having just re-read the first 4 books, I was stunned by how little I saw of the abusive implications of the Edward/Bella/Jacob dynamic when I was in my early 20s and reading these. I was absolutely stunned again by Edward's throw-away thought about Renee as neglectful and narcissistic to the point of borderline abuse. It's there, in the original 4 books. It's subtle, but it's there. It's in Bella's character. But again, I missed it. As an adult learning about being the child of a narcissist (tho good intentioned like Renee). I like that this book gives Bella dreams and direction in her life, aside from becoming a vampire. It's a small scene, something that it entirely makes sense for Bella to have omitted in her view of the scene, thereby retaining the internal consistency of the books. But it, more than anything, makes Edward's pushiness and fervent protection of Bella's human life and prospects more forgivable. He sees the way Bella has clipped her own wings-- which, as a child of a narcissist, makes total sense-- and he desperately doesn't want to be the person who does that, again. And he truly believe he will clip her wings further by his simple presence, again, making his moral stands make more sense.

This little, throwaway, revelation makes such a difference in my reading of all the books.
I understand Bella's head in a whole new way, and I understand why, in spite of a lot of problems in the series, I like it there. And Meyer's self awareness, spoken through Edward, is interesting and a bit impressive. It reveals some insecurities about her own earlier writing, I think, and stabilizes them in an brave way. Maybe I'm overrelating here that.

Lastly: the vamps bring their passions into their new life, right? Rosalie is an expert mechanic, Edward composes and learns languages, Carlisle is a passionate doctor, Alice is a fashionista, Esme is a fab interior decorator and renovator, Emmett does....something I'm sure, and Jasper is trying to get everything back in check for himself. And Bella is going to be a publisher I would guess (which, fucking cool! Love that for her.)

Who, in this family full of 'unchangeable' vampires who have spent the last 100 years fostering all kinds of mental health issues, is going to make getting a PhD in psychology their passion? That vampires are unchangeable is utter bullshit (the Romanians' literal skin changes), the worst bit of worldbuilding in the original books, and the only reason I can forgive it is that I don't think it is actually intended to be part of the world. It seems to just be an Edward belief, like the soul thing. But he, specifically, developed hella complexes as a vamp; he could, idk, fix them as a vamp? My dude, your brain is not stagnant, and your belief that it is is seriously limiting to you as a person. Signed, a (newly renewed) Edward fan
