Last but not least the story shows this when Andrew says “Chloe’s got a new friend. Chloe’s got a new friend.” Chloe whispers back “She’s not my friend”.

The story shows this when Maya smiles and Chloe doesn’t smile back. When the Maya gets seated she turns and smiles at Chloe but chloe just turns away and moves her chair and books a little closer to the window and just stares out into the snow. This is important because “Every day afterwards when Maya came into the classroom, I looked away and didn’t smile back” this discouraged Maya and more towards the end she started ignoring them. Maya is trying to make friends but they won't let her!

Another way it shows this is when Maya asks to play and Chloe,Kendra and Sophie always say no. They always are doing this and if you look in the pictures you can see she’s looking hopeful as she shows them what she got “She held open her hand to show us the shiny jacks and tiny red ball she’d gotten for her birthday. It’s a high bouncer, she said . But none of us wanted to play. So she played a game against herself” and later in class Maya whispered to Chloe “Bet you can’t guess who the new jacks champion of the world is”. You can see even if Chloe’s being mean to Maya, she is still trying to become friends with Chloe.

Last but not least the story shows this when Andrew says “Chloe’s got a new friend. Chloe’s got a new friend.” Chloe whispers back “She’s not my friend”. Also Chloe and her friends bully Maya about everything. Even about what she eats. Kendra gives Maya the name “ never new”. When Chloe is mean it makes a difference on Maya and her friends because they all could have gained a new friend, but we keep saying that it is all Chloe’s fault but Chloe didn’t call her never new Kendra did. Kendra and Sophia also did mean things but Chloe is the one who didn't smile back so it started with Chloe. When Chloe was told to place the rock in the water she didn’t have anything to say she didn’t do anything kind. Ms. Albert said “even small things count” just like not smiling to the new kid who doesn’t have any friends makes a huge difference, you may think smiling to someone won’t make a difference but it does! ...more "
