To help with any confusion, in a nutshell, the Atreides house (who live on planet Caladan) are sent by the emperor of the universe to go and live on the planet Arrakis AKA Dune, which was previously ruled by the evil and brutal Harkonnen house. Arrakis is a sand planet, and the only one with spice, which is one of the rarest and most important entities in the universe (it’s sort of like our version of oil - I think- but more special), but it’s harsh desert nature makes it near inhospitable, and water is a scarce commodity. Of course, this transition from planet to planet isn’t straight forward and here we have our main story, which is based around house rivalry, jealousy and a desperation for power, as well as the mystical, spiritual powers of Paul Atreides (the Duke Leto of Atreides’ son). Although initially confusing in terms of the names and expressions used for people and things, the descriptions of the environment and world are vivid, and if you can loosely follow the story at the beginning and keep going it quickly becomes easier to understand - the book also has a list of phrases at the end which was useful for referring back to, i.e. you may be thinking ‘what the hell is the whatever-weird-name they-have-for-something again’ etc. Having said that, I had to re-read certain parts several times to grasp what was going on, but nothing extensive. I really liked the fact that you got to see each character’s thoughts and had insight into their emotions whilst the dialogue between them and another character was taking place, even when it was one of the ‘villains’, and that the character of focus/point of view was constantly changing. I found elements to be somewhat predictable, but then had to remind myself that this is because this book was written in the 60s and was the first to do some of the now very common/generic ‘twists’. I’m definitely glad I read this before watching the movie or I’d have struggled to follow (I thought the film was amazing and am looking forward to part 2 - although having now read the book I know what happens!). ...more "
