Reymundo was constantly beaten and sexually abused by relatives until he moved with his mother and her husband to Chicago when he was seven. Once in Chicago, Reymundo’s life didn’t get much better, because his parents still beat him consistently. In order to spend as much time away from home as possible, Reymundo began hanging out with the Latin gang, a Chicago gang that some of his friends older brothers or other friends were a part of. As his home life gets worse and worse, Reymundo spends more and more time with gangs, gaining the acceptance he never got at home and meeting gang members who would serve as father figures to him. At the age of thirteen, Reymundo enters the world of alcohol, drugs, and even sex, after losing his virginity to a thirty-five year old woman. He also becomes more entangled in gang life, after spending so much time with the Latin Disciples and Spanish Lords. His family moved back to Puerto Rico, but after six months there his mother sent him back to Chicago to live with his heroin dealing stepbrother. Back in Chicago, Reymundo is free to come and go as he pleases. He is taken along on a few hits by his friends in the gangs, and becomes more entranced with gang life. His life was getting more rough than you can imagine.

Violence is the villain of the memoir. It's the theme to this story. As a young boy in Puerto Rico, five year old Reymundo was brutally beaten by his aunts and cousins while his widowed teenage mother was on her honeymoon with her new husband, Emilio. Even worse, Reymundo's eighteen-year-old cousin raped him, brutally sodomizing him, Reymundo had a tough child hood.

I would recommend this book to people who love drama, who love violence. This book will keep you hook from the start to the end. And if you have a good imagination you will enjoy it. ...more "
