I would give this book 5 stars, the tone in this book is just right for this story and it makes me think to myself what would I do in this kids position. Honestly I probably would've took the ass whooping instead of hiding in a burning house and risking everyone else life.
The book I’m reviewing is Black Boy by Richard Wright. This story takes place in Natchez, Mississippi around the year 1921. Wright starts off as a young kid, who was bored. He does not know what he is doing at the time but he burns the curtains and the fire surrounds the whole house. Richard struggles thinking if he should run out and take the punishement or hide due to problems with his family, and the fact that they can't seem to get along is because his father. After Richard’s family has finical problems he begins to see cuts in his food supply and his clothes. Hunger is a huge thing in this story he writes about his hunger and uses it as a symbol.
This book was different than others. I liked how he wrote without having to hold back. My favorite character was the main character Richard. He was a kid who goes through hard times still did not break down. I admire that he could've chose the wrong path but did'nt. Especially trying to move further in the future even with the racial stereotypes.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes inspirational books about someone who comes from nothing and turns themself into something. If you loved the movie "In The Hive" or maybe the book "The Power Of One", you will love this book Black Boy by Richard Wright. If I had to describe this book in one word, I would use deep. I noticed as I read through it that I would look at things differently. I would think even if you dont like these type of stories you still would love this one....more
