The Oakland A's and other poor or smaller teams were basically foster teams to the big or rich teams. The small teams would, in a sense, train the great players, and then the big teams would take the players from smaller teams once they could no longer afford to pay them. To try and change this, Beane wanted to change the way players where evaluated and recruited. He wanted to move away from the old methods, that and been in players since the beginning of baseball, to a new method. This method looked at all of the stat numbers on players, and using an equation turned them into one number. This number would show the percentage of how well a player would perform. Beane wanted to mainly focus on the offense part of the stats. His reasoning being that you must score runs to win ball games, and his goal was to win the World Series. Most people thought Beane was crazy for this new method, and he had a very hard time getting people to buy into his method. In the beginning of the first season, after starting this new method, the team was terrible. This was because the team manager was not listening to Beane and was not putting together the roster the method had designed to be played. Once Beane was able to get the manager to do so, the team won 20 games in a row. This is unheard of and still to this day is the record for the longest winning streak in baseball history. The A's did not win the World Series that year, 2002, but they proved to people that Beane's new method worked.

The biggest thing that Beane did, was going against everything that had ever been in place since the beginning of baseball. He did not care what people thought, and he put his career and his life on the line to change something he believed in. He wanted nothing more than to shorten the margin between the rich and poor teams. I personally think that he did a great job of this. And I admire him, for putting everything he had on the line to make his dream come true. I believe in the message that Beane showed, you have to put everything you have to something you believe in to make it come true. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a baseball fan, or someone who likes numbers. ...more "

The two men begin to talk and after a while they realize they are nothing waiting for Godot. They continue to talk as normal, mainly about the bible. They later on started talking to a man named Pozzo. Pozzo was on his way to sell his slave, Lucky. As the three men started talking Pozzo had Lucky entertain them by dancing. After talking for a while Pozzo and Lucky leave and not to long after a young boy arrives and comes up to Vladimir and Estragon. He tells them that Godot will not be coming today, but will definitely be coming the next day. Estragon and Vladimir begin talking again, but this time about suicide. After talking for a while, it begins to get dark, and they both feel as though they should leave. Yet, neither will get up and leave, so they stay. The next day Vladimir and Estragon see Pozzo and Lucky again. But something was different about them though, Pozzo was blind and Lucky could not speak, and they had no recollection of talking to Vladimir and Estragon the day before. Shortly after Pozzo and Lucky leave, the boy comes to them again, telling them the same thing as the day before. Vladimir and Estragon start talking about suicide again, and possibly committing it themselves . Then it starts to become dark again.

Suicide is the main topic in the conversations between Vladimir and Estragon. Suicide and death is also the main theme presented through out the play. Vladimir says that life has no meaning because we deadened it with habit. Waiting for Godot can relate to The Stranger by Albert Camus because Vladimir and Meursault from The Stranger have very similar views on life. Suicide normally occurs when someone is suffering. Vladimir and Estragon suffer the entire play, because they are stuck there waiting for Godot. Yet, neither Vladimir or Estragon can decide whether or not to leave and miss out on meeting Godot. I think that they even sometimes consider commiting suicide to take them selves out of waiting and their suffering, and because they know they will die some day anyway. Yet they continue to wait for Godot and suffer. This again relates to the comment that Vladimir made about life always ends with death and nothing else. ...more "

Committing this sin caused her to want to fix the problems between her and her husband which is what puts her and Little Bee in the same place.
Many different themes are shown throughout the book. One of the biggest ones I believe has to do with dealing with problems. The different problems that the characters had are the reason they were brought together. They had to deal with their own problems, but also with each other’s problems. The decisions they make for dealing with their problems are what end up deciding what is going to happen to them and others later on. Another theme has to do with problems that we have no control over. That no matter what we do will change the outcome, in some aspects. This would be fate. A great example of this would be Sarah coming traveling to the same place that Little Bee is located and them meeting each other. Sometimes things happen that we have no control over.
I believe that the different tones of humor, horror and sadness are what helped keep this book alive. They added a sense of diversity between the characters, because each of them dealt with the situations differently. With each of them going about the problems differently, the reader was able make their own predicament about if they handled the situation the right way. This also causes a diversity because when characters handle things different, it can affect other characters, because, for example, one character does not agree with how another character handled something.
In the end I personally did not like this book. This kind of book is not something that normally grabs my attention. I do believe that this book can hit home for a lot of people, because this book deals with a lot of adversity, and people deal with adversity every day of their lives. It can also show people how to handle different situations. For those that like this book though, I would recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns, because it has to deal with people dealing with adversity in their everyday lives. ...more "
