Dune is so fucking exquisite fr, the worldbuilding is so detailed and extensive; it feels like every single term has a backstory and a significance, some people have said that the story relies too much on dumping all the explanations into the glossary but to me that was a huge bonus cuz imagine explaining ALL those things in the main story, the book would be 1000 pages lmao and cutting some of those things is actually not an option, you could just get by with the context clues sometimes or you could go in and read on what this random Butlerian Jihad means and then you go down a rabbit hole because that is so fucking cool but it isn't the point of the book so you gotta move on.. yea.

Dune isn't about the good side of humanity and finding brotherhood and community it's about literal assasinations, opportunism, the exploitation of religion and resources, and how fucked up people are even thousands of years into the future, these characters are not ones you feel fondly about (except Duncan my one and only.. and Alia? maybe).

I do think the book suffers from the typical white male author in the 20th century syndrome; it is said many times that the Fremen women are just as savage and efficient in battle as the men and the children are also trained and capable of fighting and blah blah..okay? show it to me then? show me a section where the women are actually killing some people don't just tell me and expect me to believe you cuz... i'm not buying it lmao, the women in Dune are either spiritual, a witch or just hanging out, obvs there's nothing wrong w being a witch (i actually wanted MORE from the Bene Gesserit and their scheming little plots) but it annoyed me that they kept saying that Chani was such a slay fighting baddie but all she did was follow Paul like an assistant, not even a bodyguard just his assistant, although I was expecting much much worse from her, she seems to be more of the analytical type in the book.

Another thing is that yeah, the story sometimes is a lot. There's many threads connecting and unraveling and sometimes i felt like i couldn't follow everything seamlesly, and i felt some actual plot lines could've been explained better but for some reason it also made me like it a bit more? like i was amused every time i went "tf is going on rn?"

IF Only you could see my copy of this book i went crazy, i almost ran out of ink and post its, I'm taking a break for like a month and then I'm jumping right into book two rrraahhhhh ...more "

11/22/63 has everything I love about Stephen King and about books in general; great plot, steady pacing, amazing and fleshed out characters and easy to follow action that isn’t boring or bland.

The plot is a given duh, time traveling to save arguably one of the best presidents of the US! but I think that what elevated it even more was the in between, the times from the moment he arrives and the assassination, at first I thought the idea of having Derry show up was cringe and pushy but in the end it didn’t bother me as much, in fact it was fun to see Mr Keene being referred to as the perfect Derry citizen and the town itself being full of inbred hillbillies; Jake literally says the town is mistrusting and violent I loved it. And in Derry is where the Dunning’s live and I loved the bit of their story so I can’t not like it. Then you follow Jake throughout the country ending up in Texas and boy I loved every second of it, Jodie was such a lovely place with lovely people it’s so unfair. Also the harmonizations he encountered everywhere, VERY Interesting way of keeping you engaged.

Now the characters obviously are the other strongest point, every SK book I’ve read has great characters; I fell in love w Jake and Sadie (as a couple and on their own), again I was expecting to cringe when reading abt a romance written by a 50 yr old man but I WAS SWOONING THE WHOLE TIME GODDAMNIT (I did cringe but bc I knew an old man wrote this and managed to make me feel some type of way) WHEN HE SAID HE’D LOVE HER FACE NO MATTER WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE BC ITS HERS I SCREAMED

but fr they were endgame for me, I will never get over how beautiful their relationship was. And so many other characters made me feel every emotion ever, Mike Coslaw and Marina Oswald, Harry Dunning, Al Templeton and even Lee; I was so confused on how to feel abt him like yea he’s an asshole and a wife beater but he is such a low bum I felt pity for him.

Okay now things I didn’t like: the first half of the book SK would phrase sentences weirdly like he’s writing an 80’s sitcom, the bit with Beverly and Richie; I liked it overall but again sometimes he’d write sentences in such a cringe way it’s obvious he added them for nostalgia, and the lack of awareness of racial issues in the 50’s 60’s; he does address it a few times which I guess is better than nothing but uhm yea (we did get The Housekeeper lady tho, and I loved the page she showed up in)

Other than that this book blew my fucking mind bro, and the last 100 pages had me on a chokehold screaming and crying for my life; earthquake ridden future? the ocher card man? “Someone you knew in another life, honey”?!??!?!

I read this bc it’s Caja de Películas and Daniel Greene’s favorite and now it’s also my fave tyvm ...more "
