After all, it was written by a well-respected doctor, so how ridiculous could it be?

The book did not disappoint. When it arrived, it felt a little like I was holding an old scientific textbook, rich in well-explained, easy-to-digest information. And that's exactly what it was. Strassman regales the reader in a straight-forward and chronological manner his journey through the scientific community (including an emotional rollercoaster ride of his own) to document the effects on volunteers who have been injected with pure, lab-grade DMT.

I won't spoil anything for the reader, however, I will say that - even if this is a load of codswallop - it is still an exceptionally interesting and well put together volume on one of the most controversial molecules ever discovered. Strassman explains precisely and in a balanced fashion the struggles he faced acquiring DMT and his path through the various red tape to begin experimentation, as well as a personable retelling of the patients' thoughts, experiences, and - critically - the follow-ups to the study.

I feel that anyone who has a keen interest in both science and spirituality who seeks to synthesise the two seemingly antipodal fields has much to learn from this book. However, it is well written and accessible enough so that it could be enjoyed by just about anyone who is open-minded and willing to join Strassman on his career-defining adventure into human consciousness and what may lie beyond.

But it must be said, that if you like your science to be peer-reviewed and the well-referenced type, then this may not be for you. I am not saying that Strassman is not legitimate, but the reader must understand that he is delving head first into a field of enquiry that is far from being widely understood and is only just entering serious investigation. In that way, Strassman and his study have trailblazed a fresh route of enquiry into what I believe is something that we still have plenty from which to learn. Admittedly, there requires a generous leap of the imagination to come to terms with the implications of this study but what will encourage the rationally-minded, though, is that Strassman remains as objective as a man so close to the study could possibly be - and for this I respect him greatly.

Read it, or don't read it - it's your decision. For me though, I know I will keep this on my bookshelf for a very long time.
