What I enjoyed most about this book was the tone of the narrators voice. It felt as if I was actually looking through her eyes in her head while reading. As a child of about 3 years young she is completely tantalized by her parents adoring their adventure seeking ways. When she was 6 she was travelling in the back of a truck however uncomfortable she was she did not get angry. Slowly as the years fly by, with a gradual outside world interaction with people the realization and resentment starts to settle in. She went through so many betrayals but yet was still able to take all the disappointment, works hard and finally gets from Welch to New York to succeed in self empowerment. I am still amazed on how little rage and bitterness she had through the story. It was very refreshing to read about. However I found myself yelling at her parents, a charming alcoholic father, always with a master plan to bring upon riches, and a selfish (seemingly bipolar) mother, focused on her "art" and her need to live life as a constant adventure."Sometimes you need a little crisis to get your adrenaline flowing and help you realize your potential," said her mother, as she arguably put the words into practice again and again, while her starving children made the best of their impoverished upbringings. It would seem though that her parents taught them a lot in certain aspects. Especially how to fend for themselves in the cold dark world. As well from the tone of this book, written with great pride for not just her brother, but also her two dear sisters, as well as her mom and dad, she definitely took to heart her mothers advice. "Learn to enjoy the comic episodes." The story of Jeannette Walls and her search for a home is ultimately filled with more smiles than heartaches. Highly recommended in my opinion however if you dislike child neglect and that sort of thing you shouldn't read it but give it a second thought. ...more "
