I personally do not read fantasy novels, however; this is a must read. The book itself will keep you entertained and keep you up late because you have to know what happens next. The text is written in such a powerful way that you will truly feel the emotions and the struggles the main character Kvothe is going through. The text will truly make it easy to connect with each and every character in the book. Kvothe is faced with many challenges at a very young age. He loses his family, is homeless in a city, and despite his struggles makes it to the University to learn magic. Kote is working as an innkeeper at the Waystone Inn hiding out from his real identity, Kvothe. He has his student Bast there with him. Kvothe is known for many heroic things but it is not talked about at first because everyone knows him as Kote. When creatures (scrael) begin to appear around town people start talking and it leads to Chronicler coming to find Kvothe at the inn. “The innkeeper's eyes were distant. Scrael he said distractedly……… “You’ve seen these things before? What? The red haired innkeeper looked up sharply as if suddenly remembering where he was. Oh no of course not”(Rothfuss pg.8). When Chronicler arrives at the Inn the story really begins to evolve. The story is formatted with Kvothe telling Chronicler the story again with his student Bast by his side. Kvothe tells Chronicler his story will take three days to tell. “The story will take three days Kote interrupted” (Rothfuss pg. 51). Kvothe tells his story of losing his family to the Chandrian and his travels through Tarbean ( the city he is homeless in) and his trip the University. He tells the story of how his troupe died by the Chandrian. Kvothe is on a mission to figure out more about the Chandrian that killed his family and hopes to find this information at the University where he is also getting his education. Kvothe only knows minimal about the Chandrian and uses what he does know to talk to people and find out more. The book also shows love. Kvothe meets a girl named Denna and Rothfuss again does a fantastic job driving our emotions through their relationship. “In the middle of my musing, she turned to look in my direction and caught me staring at her“(Rothfuss pg. 235). Kvothe and Denna have a very interesting relationship and the book leaves many unanswered questions about a lot, including Denna. Again, Rothfuss is keeping you on the edge of your seat to go get the next book. The way the story is written really allows you to see Chroniclers reactions to the stories being told but also allows the reader to relate the story to their lives as well. The book also shows you how courageous Kvothe is and how even though you have trials in life you can still succeed. Kvothe shows us throughout the book how to stand up for what you believe in. Overall, everyone should read this book this is a must read and will take you on a rollercoaster ride of your emotions. Do not judge the book based on the genre, I never thought I would enjoy it and I couldn’t put it down. ...more "
