“I fell in love with you and Max," he said, but he stared at the fire, not at her. He'd never before told a woman he loved her. He had a feeling that most of the women he'd known in New York would have responded by getting a calculator and figuring their cut of his wealth.”

“She gazed up at his face, ran her fingers along his unshaven cheeks. "I missed you."
He pulled her into his arms. She relaxed into him and let him hold her. She could feel the rhythm of his heart and pressed her lips against the soft cotton T-shirt that covered his chest.
"I missed you," she whispered again.
He stepped back for a moment, holding her at arm's length. "I missed you, too.”

He reached for her hand. "I think I'm falling in love with you, Caroline."
It felt like someone had knocked the air clean out of her.”

“You wound me, " he said, and pressed his palm over his heart. "Won't you ride with me?"
"I appreciate the offer, I do, but I might want to leave the dinner early."
His eyes brightened. "With me?"
"No. It's been a long day and I'm exhausted."
Scott released a long, exaggerated sigh. "If you must."
"I must," she insisted.
The two walked side by side toward the parking lot. Abby wasn't fooled. Scott was a flirt and way too glib for her to take him seriously. Nevertheless, she couldn't remember an evening she'd enjoyed more...and the festivities were just getting started.”
