The storytelling has a distinctly juvenile tone to it, like it was written by a preteen who has barely experienced life but thinks they have enough wisdom to recreate the many devastations life can offer. What we are left with is drama that is sudden and undeveloped, with little to no preparation. We get pummeled with new magic and new abilities and new monsters, but none of it hits like it should because it isn't done in a clever way that makes a lightbulb go off in your head as if to say, "Oh my gosh. I should have seen that coming. All the signs were there."

The heroine is just as infuriating as she was in the first book, if not more so. She gets pieces of information, draws idiotic conclusions, and then ACTS ON THEM. Constantly. She stumbles through every scenario like a parent trying to get ready for work in the morning, the room pitch black, and steps on every single Lego piece there is, not missing a single one in the minefield of pain before her. After the first Lego piece, a normal person would say "Hm, maybe I should turn on a light. Maybe I should not walk through this room. Maybe I should look for a better path to my shoes." But noooo, Isla is like "Yesss, no pain, no gain. I'm going to make it to the other side in the most DIFFICULT way possible, so I can prove just how incompetent I am, leaving zero room for anyone to think otherwise."

But then... The memory sequences of Grim and Isla falling in love for the first time, while knowing they aren't together, is enough to wreck my heart. It shouldn't work. I shouldn't love Oro and Grim equally. I shouldn't be rooting for both. The author doesn't write love triangles well. She creates a biased narrative for her readers by essentially taking massive amounts of page time and relationship development out of the picture for one character in favor of developing it for another. In book 1, you couldn't help but love Oro because more time was dedicated to him. In book 2, the romantic relationship between Oro and Isla exists for all of 2 chapters before Oro is barely even mentioned anymore. It's disingenuous and it makes me mad, because I am attached to my golden boy Oro, and it's all because I'm subsisting off of his story from book 1. It's sloppy, and as mad as I am at the author for such nonsense, I'm just as mad at myself for enjoying it so much that I think might actually go insane waiting for book 3. Grim. Ugh. You came out of left field, shadow guy, and I'm here for it.

I'm still stuck on this sickening ride with nothing but saran wrap and Twizzler ropes to keep me up, but now I've developed a horrible case of Stockholm syndrome with this roller coaster. It's looking more and more like a true pal the longer I'm strapped to this instrument of chaos, and I'm starting to convince myself that all the things I hate about it are actually brilliant. I mean. Strapping me with Twizzler ropes? Whoever was kind enough to give me snacks while I'm stuck here against my will is clearly my best friend, right? ...more "
